"You can't let a young 'un decide for himself. He'll grab at the first flashy thing with shiny ribbons on it. Then when he finds out there's a hook in it, it's too late. Wrong ideas come packaged with so much glitter, it's hard to convince them that other things might be better in the long run. All a parent can do is say, 'wait...trust me.'" - Sheriff Andy Taylor
CONGRATULATIONS to our environmental club who traveled to Ft Lauderdale, Florida to present at the 2012 Wheelabrator Symposium. They presented their project, "Water, Water Everywhere." It is about the Hudson river watershed and the three smaller watersheds that encompass Peekskill. They went to the Miami Seaqarium as well. We are proud of our program and how our students represented Peekskill nationally during this symposium. Thank you Mr. Cooley and Ms. Mahoney for their tireless dedication as well as Mr. Tabone and Ms. Damiano who joined the group this year. All the best and see you soon. The students involved are: Alana Donabie; Birch Lazo-Murphy; Shania Minard; Devin Guardino; Sammala Clarke; Catherine Lively; Brianna Curry; Emily Czerwinski; Rebecca Tuteur; and Briana Jackson; Attached is a picture of our students prior to leaving for the airport.

Peekskill Middle School strives to promote the idea that education is an ongoing process, which create not only personal growth, but professional/life-long success. The mission of our school and district alike is to educate students in a caring and inspiring environment; characterized by a spirit of excellence, safety, and high expectations amongst all stakeholders within. We recognize the developmental needs of our students and individualize our approaches both in and out of the classroom.
Our school of approximately 600 students is divided into six houses. Each grade level (6th - 8th) is divided into two teams. The 21st century building provides separate wings for each team. This allows teachers and students to create unique and positive relationships that focus on their academic, social, and emotional needs. A guidance counselor is assigned to each grade level and the classrooms are directly across from each other, which supports the team approach and collaborative efforts. This model provides significant support to the teaching/learning process as your child moves through his/her middle school years.
Another component to the Middle School is LEAP (Learning Enrichment Activities Program), which extends our students day and provides not only academic support, but an opportunity to explore and enrich the curriculum in a project-based type of environment. The Middle School also offers a variety of after-school clubs, athletics, and programs that can be accessed through our website. In addition to teacher web-pages, each child is assigned a secure e-mail that is utilized for staff/student communication. This allows for a secure conversation relative to the learning process. It also provides an opportunity for students to inquire or share information with their teachers and/or send school-related reminders.
Peekskill Middle School is a wonderful place to teach and learn. Making good choices for yourself and each other has become a school motto. We are proud everyday by the fantastic decisions and accomplishments our school, staff, and students alike continue to make. Please feel free to contact us at anytime. Our website is updated weekly and our "Monday Morning Reflections" newsletter provides up to date information/events/programs.
Thank you for what you do for our school and students alike. Have a great school year!
Sincerely,
Dr. David Fine

Thinking or Living Green – Recycling -- What’s It All About?
Tips and Facts to Help You Get It All Together
Thinking or “Living Green” means to reduce your impact on the environment by living an eco-friendly life style.
Recycling is the process of separating, collecting and re-manufacturing or converting used or waste products into new materials.
Key Elements for Living Green are “The Four R’S”
Rethink – Reuse—Reduce—Recycle!!
Rethink – Awareness is the foremost step in this concern. So before buying any products carefully analyze how “green” it is. When we stop buying products that are harmful for the environment, companies will stop manufacturing them.
Reuse – There are many things which can be reused instead of being thrown away. So, before you decide to throw something away, think carefully how it can be reused.
Reduce – Reduce your consumption of water, electricity and gasoline to whatever extent possible. Avoid unnecessary wastage of these resources.
Recycle –Lastly, recycle as much as possible! The recycling process helps conserve raw materials and energy that manufactures would otherwise use in producing new products. It also helps lessen the pollution that may result from waste disposal.
What Materials Can Be Recycled? Lots! Some are Listed Below
Cell Phones Computers Ink Cartridges Metals (steel, foil, cans)
Paper Pallets Plastic Styrofoam
Tires Water PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
Some Easy Things To Do
- Recycle household Items – Give away or donate old clothes and items!
- Buy rechargeable batteries!
- Buy energy efficient light bulbs!
- Use your own canvas bag every time you go shopping! Do not accept the plastic bags that stores offer.
- Cut down on fuel usage – Try walking short distances. Consider carpooling, riding a bike or taking public transportation. If buying a new car consider getting a “green” one.
